The Hougen Family in the Yukon

It is impossible to know what Berent Hougen thought as he walked the train tracks into Whitehorse in 1906. But something about Yukon stuck and he returned 38 years later with a family in tow. From that point on, the Hougen family began contributing their own chapters to the story of Yukon. Having built the territory’s largest retail establishment, the family also made significant forays into radio, television, and national communications. Their efforts have done much to realize the Whitehorse and Yukon we enjoy and love today. This pictorial history, available at Mac’s Fireweed or yukonbooks.com, celebrates an extraordinary family as well as the town and territory that made it all possible.
